Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What type of therapy is best for me?
We have experience working with a wide variety of therapies and treatments. Your counsellor will be able to assess and discuss which therapy would be best for you during your consultation and first sessions when we discuss your expectations and goals.
What is a consultation?
We like to start your counselling with a complimentary 15 minute phone consultation. You will learn about our process (confidentiality, therapist background, what brings you to counselling) and you will have an opportunity to ask any questions. It is obligation free, and if we are not a good fit, we will do our best to connect you with another therapist.
Do you offer virtual treatments?
The majority of our team offers both in person and virtual sessions.
How do I prepare for my first session?
Please make sure you have a strong internet connection and a quiet and private space to talk. Other than that, no preparation is needed for your first session.
What should I expect from my first session?
You can expect a welcoming and professional environment. We will take your concerns very seriously. We will use our experience and expertise to gain a thorough understanding of your concerns and help you move forward in a direction you can feel satisfied about.
How long does a session last?
We book a 50 minute session. The other ten minutes in the hour are used to complete our session notes.
How many sessions will I need to attend?
Each client has their own therapeutic goals. Some clients may meet their goals in 5 sessions; however, some complex issues or changes to life-long patterns may continue beyond 12 sessions.
How can I book a session?
You can book a session by filling out our online contact form and we will reach out to you.
Are your sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is extremely important to us. Nothing will be communicated to anyone without your expressed consent. We will not disclose your affiliation with our practice in any way. All online sessions are encrypted and password coded.
There are limits, however, to confidentiality where we are bound to disclose information:
-
When there is an imminent risk to you or others.
-
When there is a suspicion or disclosure of neglect/abuse involving a vulnerable person or child.
-
When a client’s records are subpoenaed by a court order.
-
If another social worker in some way is harming you.
Do I require a referral from a doctor?
We do not require you to have a doctor’s note to receive our services. Please speak to your insurance provider as some private insurance companies require a referral to receive reimbursement. Please check with your insurance provider.
Do you see people under 18 years of age?
Yes, we do see people under 18.
Do you see couples together and/or separately?
Yes, we do - but please contact us to discuss your specific needs.
What are your fees and how do I pay?
Our fees are based on the length of session. Our rate for a session is $165/hr and we only accept e-transfers. An invoice will be provided following your first session with payment details.
Is there tax on your fee?
There are no taxes on services provided by a social worker in Ontario.
Do you provide direct billing?
No, we do not provide direct billing.
Are my sessions covered by insurance?
In most extended benefits plans our services are covered. Talk to your provider for the amount of sessions and percentage covered.
How much coverage do I have?
Please check with your insurance provider as we do not have this information.
How do I submit a claim to my insurance?
After our first session, we will send out an invoice to the email you provided. Once we receive an e-transfer, we will send a receipt to your email. You can then provide that receipt to your insurance provider.

Can I request a letter from my clinician?
Yes, in the event that you would like a supporting letter or your clinician to draft a document for you this can be done at request and will be billed in accordance with the time involved in this process. Please ask your clinician for details.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask that you give us at least 2 business days notice for any changes or cancellations to appointments. In the event that a session is missed, it is necessary for us to charge for a full session. A portion of that charge will be donated to Hamilton Food Share.
